SURYANARAYANA RAO: A FORGOTTEN REFORMER OF KERALA RENAISSANCE

  Jyothirmani Vatakkayil

Head, Department of History, Sri Vyasa NSS College, Wadakkanchery, Thrissur, Kerala, India.

Abstract

Suryanarayana Rao was a dedicated reformer who played a crucial role in rehabilitating Mappila prisoners following the rebellion in Malabar. As an Honorary Joint Secretary of the Mappila Aid Committee in Calicut, he actively sought financial support from various sources, including the Viceroy, the Governor, and Prince Nizam. His deep commitment to the cause is evident in his persistent efforts to engage both government officials and the Mappila community despite their initial reluctance. Beyond his humanitarian work, Rao was a key figure in the activities of the Depressed Classes Mission (DMRT), inspiring people from different social backgrounds, including royal figures, to support marginalized communities. His influence led to the establishment of the Thrithala Adidravida Colony in Valluvanad with the patronage of Vallabha Raja, who donated land and pledged further assistance. Through his relentless advocacy and persuasive leadership, Rao significantly contributed to Kerala’s social renaissance, making him an unsung reformer of his time.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of an outcome-based health education package in enhancing health awareness among secondary school students. A pre-test and post-test experimental design was employed to measure the impact of the health education program on students’ awareness of key health concepts. A sample of 200 secondary school students was randomly assigned to either the experimental or control group. The experimental group received the health education package consisting of comprehensive modules on nutrition, physical activity, mental health, and hygiene, while the control group received regular health education. Data were collected via a structured questionnaire assessing health awareness. The results revealed that the experimental group significantly improved health awareness compared to the control group. The study concludes that outcome-based health education packages are an effective means of enhancing health awareness among secondary school students, suggesting that integrating such packages into school curricula could promote healthier lifestyles among adolescents.

Abstract

Ecological justice is a growing field of philosophical study that examines the ethical and moral aspects of humanity’s interaction with the environment. It is based on the principle that humans and nature are deeply interconnected, advocating for an equitable distribution of environmental advantages and responsibilities among all species, communities, and future generations. This perspective challenges conventional justice models that primarily focus on human interests, instead promoting a broader framework that recognizes the inherent rights of ecosystems, non-human entities, and those yet to come. Philosophical discussions on ecological justice highlight the necessity of scrutinizing economic systems, power structures, and technological advancements that contribute to environmental degradation. Drawing insights from diverse traditions such as deep ecology, ecofeminism, and Indigenous knowledge systems, ecological justice calls for a fundamental ethical shift toward sustainability, fairness, and environmental stewardship. By addressing the root causes of ecological destruction and fostering solidarity between human and non-human life, this concept advocates for transformative changes in societal values. These include preserving biodiversity, restoring ecosystems, and re-evaluating conventional notions of development and progress. Ultimately, ecological justice upholds the moral responsibility to protect the environment for future generations, providing a comprehensive framework for achieving a more just and sustainable world for all forms of life.
